Description:
“How Parents Benefit from Reading
to their Little Children”
With foundation funding, Lapsits for Early Literacy™, a nonprofit
organization targeting parents and caregivers of newborns through three
year olds has developed a professionally produced video that describes
how and why the entire family benefits from early literacy interaction,
especially reading aloud.
Our video offers these features:
Purpose:
- To raise parents’ awareness of the importance of reading
to their little ones during the first three years
- To raise awareness
of brain and language growth in the first 3 years (2:30 minutes)
- To illustrate to
parents how they benefit from taking time to read aloud (5:00 minutes)
- To link very early
reading aloud to future reading success (2:30 minutes)
Length: 10 minutes
Audience:
- Parents in Parenting Centers
- Child Care Centers
- Early Head
Start and Head Start
- Even Start, Family Literacy
- Hospital System Pediatric
- ROAR
- WIC Program Families
- Families
with newborns through 3 year olds
Use:
The length allows for flexibility of use. The three segments
of the video can be discussed separately, if desired, during parent meeting
presentations. A looping format can be ordered for view in waiting rooms.
Distribution with parent educators for individual home viewing can provide
opportunities for family-specific conversations.
Unique Qualities:
- Multi-ethnic parents
and children with infants through three year olds
- Field tested with
more than 250 parent educators, child care staff members, and 4 year kindergarten
teachers, speech pathologists, and parents
- Written
and directed by a nationally known family literacy specialist.
